missing my focus

My attention span is limited these days. I can barely focus on something for more than five minutes. When that happens, it becomes extremely difficult for me to write a blog post with substance or do anything that remotely involves me thinking for an extended period of time.

So I don't know how much blogging you'll get from me this week (good blogging, at least). But I do have a few updates:

Joey and I had our physicals done yesterday morning for home study paperwork. I've been seeing my GP for 14 years. He knows all about our struggles to conceive, and he was excited to hear about our adoption plans. Both of us had to get tetanus shots. Wow, I forgot how sore those things make your arm! Other than that, it was an easy visit and he wrote nice things about us from a personal standpoint on the medical form.

The stock market is not making me a happy person these days. We planned on withdrawing the money from Joey's 401k at the end of the year to help us cover some adoption related expenses. We have most of the money we need for the adoption itself in a money market account. (I say "most of" because the expenses can fluctuate depending on the situation.) But we wanted to use the money from Joey's 401k to help pad our regular savings account a little more for the weeks I would be out of work without pay. Unfortunately, we've lost some money this week. Not much compared to some, but it still made a nice little dent. I'm torn between riding this out and just taking the money now. Thoughts from those of you who are way better at this financial stuff than me?

The trip to New York to the Night of Hope is booked. I leave exactly one month from today. I still plan on writing a post about the win. I have about half of it written and saved... see what I mean about my attention span? It's coming. I promise.

Okay, so that was more than five minutes. But that's about all I can spit out for now.

I got a tetanus shot at the ER when I broke my arm and it hurt worse than the broken arm for days! Glad your physicals went well. Looking forward to your post about the Resolve award.

Well, I can't offer you web hosting (assuming you haven't deleted that comment), but I'm glad to hear about the updates moving forward with the adoption! That's exciting.

And, I'm just glad to hear from you -- it doesn't have to be a "post of substance!" :) I know that feeling of not being able to focus and just feeling a flinky. Sometimes it takes a while to get beyond that.

No idea about the money. It's kind of sucky.

Ugh, the money thing is hard. I know it's not advised to remove during volatile market swings. But if you need the money, you need the money. Tough call.

I don't know how much better at financial management I possibly could be (I don't see myself that way at all), but I recommend not touching your money. If you have to, stop contributing until December. Remember you'll not only have to play taxes on the 401(k), but also penalties. Find out how much. It might make more sense to use credit card debt. You have to do a side-by-side comparison.

Good luck!

Can you take a loan out of Joey's 401K? It's a great way to take money out without tax penalties. We took out a bit for our housing down payment. That would probably be better than credit card debt anyway.

Hope your arm feels better soon!

One more hurdle down...isn't it a relief!

I had a tetanus shot before our honeymoon and it hurt like a bitch for a week. I believe I even made the statement that I can't imagine having actual tetanus would be much worse. :)

You shouldn't touch your 401 k. Seriously.

Happy you got the physicals out of the way! Nice of your doc to include some nice personal comments on your adoption forms too =)

My vote on anything you have in the market is to let it ride for a while. This week has been so volitile I wouldn't make any moves now...

My DH has some advice as he's in the financial industry...
He says it's not a good idea to take from your 401(K) because there's a federal penalty of 10% applied to ANY money taken out before you're 59.5 years old. He suggests saving up instead of dipping into that.
He says you should call the Plan Administrator and ask what the loan provisions and all penalties.
Probably not what you wanted to hear but that's his 2 cents.....

Soo excited about your trip to NYC!

I have no idea what to say about the stock market. I'd normally say ride it out but since you're eyeing the money for the end of the year, I'm not sure how long things will take to bounce back.

Oh, those tetanus shots suuuuuck. Try to use the injected arm as much as you can, the more you move it the more it'll loosen up.

Congrats again on the blog win! I'm excited for your trip to NY!

I remember getting the tetanus shot. I figured I had been doing injectables so long it wouldn't be a big deal.

I was wrong.

Good luck!

I am so excited for you as you move forward in the adoption process, and very sorry for this unforeseen obstacle. I hope you found some good advice regarding the market swing . . . I remember my husband talking about that when it happened . . . looking forward to hearing more updates!
