news

I need surgery. It will be at some point this month - possibly as early as this week. I have a 5 cm cyst on my left ovary, which is enlarged (ovaries typically have a volume of 5-15 ml and my left ovary has a volume of 130 ml).

I have no idea yet what the surgery will entail. If it will be another lap or if they will take out the ovary. We are going to try desperately to convince them to remove it all together. If not, I will certainly ask for testing of the tissue and the cyst.

That's all I know for now.

I know that if someone came in and read this without knowing you they might be shocked at what you just wrote, but to those of us that know you we know that if taking the ovary finally rids you of your pain than it is the best thing. I hate that you have to go through ANY of this! I really hope you're able to find some relief this weekend, and as always you're in my thoughts.

I have had issues with ovarian cysts over the past 2.5 years. I recently had to have one cyst aspriated (drained). The procedure wasn't the worst but it isn't the most pleasant because I wasn't given a local for it. I was admitted to the hospital for day surgery and the whole process took about 3 hours, but removing the cyst actually only took about a few minutes. Whstever you decide to do, hope that you feel better.

It is what it is said...

I had a similar sized cyst as I was doing IVF. I had already had two surgeries for fibroids and did not want surgery to derail my cycling plans. I elected to have the cyst aspirated (where more than 8 oz of fluid was drained). The pathology was benign. However, the cyst re-filled twice more and twice more I had it aspirated (no anesthesia). The 3rd time was the charm and it finally subsided.

Good luck with it. They should be able to get it laparoscopically.

I hate this stubborn cyst for you:( I am hoping the procedure will be easy and will bring you fast relief. I can't even imagine the discomfort and pain you must be in! My angry ovary was 'only' at 41 ml, and it put me in misery. I am not surprised by your thoughts just wanting to get it out already. But I am still hoping and praying they will be able to help you with a relatively easy and conservative procedure, and that you will heal fast!
Thinking of you!

I hope the surgery soon and it alleviates the pain and hopefully gets some answers or they go ahead and remove it. I never imagined saying that to anyone, but you've been in so much pain from this and it's been causing so much problems. I really hope that this is resolved soon.

PS- I did have a 4 cm cyst during one of my IVF cycles and we did get it to go away. I am not sure though if there is a difference in the type of cyst. I do remember it made me uncomfortable though. :(

Oh no. I am so sorry Katie, but at least you have some explanation of what's going on. I hope they listen to you, and that the lap goes well.

UGH! I'm sorry Katie =(. Hopefully they will just take the whole ovary out so you won't have to deal with this anymore!! You are a poster child for the importance of being your own advocate - you know your body better than anyone and it is SO frustrating when doctors (and/or other healthcare providers) won't listen to you!
I'm sorry you are having to go through all of this! Thinking of you. . .
