no strings attached

Last night, the last of my scab fell off of the incision in my belly button. After it fell off, I noticed what I thought was a piece of dry skin left behind. I tried to take it off, but I couldn't get a good grip on it. So I brought out the tweezers. That's when I realized that the piece of my "dry skin" was fraying at the end. Kind of like a . . .

Holy s*!&. A string was coming out of my belly button. But not just any string. It was my internal stitches.

After freaking out, tweeting, sending e-mails, texting, leaving messages with two of my family members who are RNs, consulting Dr. Google, and staring at it for a while, I finally decided to call and leave a message with the on-call nurse. She promptly paged the on-call doc and told me someone would call me soon. About 15 minutes later, the doc returned my call. Turns out that this happens all of the time. Apparently my body is just rejecting the stitches and this is it pushing the stitches back out. She said it would fall out on it's own or be ready to pull out in two weeks.

So for the next two weeks, I will have a string coming out of my belly button. Just one more sign that I am not normal.

Wow. Just wow. That brought to mind a whole bunch of Stephen King like images (sorry). At least it's not something they forgot in there. Yikes.

Hey now! you are normal, any tme ive had surgery... Ive had my fair share, my body has rejected internal stitches (or anykind for that matter) I always pull or cut it myself, you have way more self control than I.

:)

and atlest your body knows "hey this isn't supposed to be in here... get out!!!"

Wow! When you thought you have heard everything....wow! Seems like something they should have warned you may happen BEFORE the surgery. I am glad though that there is nothing "wrong."
From one abnormal to another...take care!

I think it would take all I have not to pull that thing out! I hope it just falls out on its own soon...

I'm dying laughing... I'm sorry for the scare, hon, but at least it's nothing harmful. Glad you're healing!!!

Wow. I've never heard of that.
That is kind of creepy! Good to know that it's normal though. It would have totally freaked me out!

Oh no! You poor thing! Well, maybe the little string sticking out your belly button is a reminder that your body is a fighter and it knows what's right and what isn't. Not right - stitches inside you. Right - a baby inside you. I will choose to see this as a very good sign! :)

That must be a scary experience, but I am glad the doctor could give you a re-assuring answer about WTH is going on. I hope you get rid of it soon. I had the same but only a shorter peace (did not need many stiches inside) and the doc helped me to get rid of it after 2wks.

The same thing happened to me...I promise they will go away.

AHHH I totally had that happen to me too. It freaked me outttttt! Eventually the incision healed enough that my doc just cut off the little piece that was sticking out and it didn't open the wound back up. I still have a deformed belly button because it's all twisted and pushed out where the string popped out! Don't worry - it will be totally fine!

Oh, that is crazy! Will they stay put where they are for now?

Woah, I'm pretty sure I would have passed out right there. And after I got over that, it would have taken everything in me not to yank that sucker out. I'm glad to hear its normal though, and hopefully it decides to come out sooner rather than later...just so you don't have to keep looking at it!

That sounds so incredibly freaky. I would cry. Or throw up. Or both

Well I'm glad everything is ok and it'll come out or be ready to pull out on it's own soon. I bet you were freaked!!! I had to laugh too, you made it funny even though I know you were probably freaking out. =) See ya tomorrow!

It's so good that you called your doctor and they got back to you so quickly. You could look at it that your body is more normal than others...that it knows something doesn't belong.

How long is the string?

Oh my goodness! I would have freaked out! Can you trim the string?

How just truly bizarre!!! That would definitely have freaked me out.

Yuck! My internal stitches took forever to go away. I kept wanting to pick at them, but I never had a string hanging out.
